How I Make My Handmade Resin Sun Catchers (A Behind-the-Scenes Look)

Have you ever held a sun catcher up to the light and watched it throw rainbows across the room? That magic doesn't happen by accident — let me show you how it's made.

My name is Jessica, and I'm the artist behind Savy Phoenix Creations, a Latina-owned small business based in Orlando, FL. Every sun catcher I create is made with intention, healing energy, and a whole lot of love. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at my process.

Step 1: Setting the Intention (and the Vibe)

Before I start any pour, I set up my space. Crystals on the table, good music in the air, and positive energy all around. I truly believe that handmade pieces carry the energy of the person who made them — and I want every sun catcher to bring light and good vibes into your home.

My materials include:

• Epoxy resin — crystal clear and perfect for catching light
• Transparent pigments and alcohol inks — so light can pass through the color beautifully
• Dried flowers, glitter, and metallic foils — for depth and that wow factor
• Sun catcher molds — dragons, turtles, phoenixes, leaves, moons, and more
• Crystals — hand-selected for each piece to make everything feel cohesive and intentional
• Hanging hardware — so your piece is ready to hang the moment it arrives

Step 2: Mixing the Resin

Resin is mixed in precise ratios — typically 1:1 resin to hardener — and stirred slowly and carefully to avoid bubbles. This step requires patience, but it's everything. A bad mix means a cloudy or brittle piece, and that's never leaving my studio.

Once mixed, I add transparent pigments and inks. For sun catchers specifically, I use colors that are made to let light through — deep jewel tones, soft pastels, and everything in between. Watching the colors bloom in the resin is honestly one of my favorite moments of the whole process.

Step 3: The Pour and the Details

I pour the resin into my molds in layers, adding dried flowers, glitter, or foil at different depths to create dimension. When you hold the finished piece up to a window, you'll see all those layers catch the light differently — that's completely intentional.

A heat gun helps pop surface bubbles and brings out the richness of the colors. Then the molds go somewhere safe, flat, and undisturbed for 24–48 hours to cure. Yes, I check on them constantly. No, I'm not sorry about it.

Step 4: Demolding and the Big Reveal

Popping a cured sun catcher out of its mold is genuinely one of the best feelings. I flex the silicone gently, ease the piece out, and hold it up to the light for the first time.

Chef's kiss. Every single time.

From there, I sand any rough edges and do a final polish to maximize clarity. Then comes one of my favorite finishing touches — the crystals. I hand wire each one myself, picking every crystal specifically for the piece I'm working on — the color, the energy, the way it complements the resin. Nothing is random. Every element is chosen with intention so that the finished sun catcher feels complete and cohesive, not just assembled.

Each piece gets a thorough quality check — if it's not something I'd hang in my own home, it doesn't go in the shop.
